De-clutter & Popcorn Tins

February 1st, 2005

I just re-cleaned 3 empty popcorn tins. Absolutely nothing in any of them. Well - two are the popcorn tins, one is a big cookie tin. It’s a bit wider than the popcorn tin. I thought about putting them back in the bathroom to hold extra toilet paper, but I think the lid might be too hard for dd to open. I cannot get all of the tape off one of the cans.
So while searching to see what other uses they can be used for, I found these:

Grab some fabric that you have, and wrap it around it. Sheer of the excess edges with your scissors. Tack the fabric down with your glue gun and do the top of the tins lid the same way. From here you can leave it the way it is or embellish it with ribbon to clean up the edges, use that kids embossing bottle paint to write on top of the lid the future contents, such as “Salt” or “Toys” etc. And fill with what you like! I personally use it for my salt bases for bath salt making. Place a scoop in there and all set!

While in general that may be a neat idea, I won’t use fabric on the bathroom tins, because if the toilet floods again, it’ll just get ruined. I try to stay away from bubble baths and salts (I will use Epsom Salt, if needed) because of UTI (urinary tract infection). We could use it as a wastebasket, but we already have one in the bathroom.

For outside the bathroom uses for popcorn tins:
Holding Christmas decorcations
Storing cookie cutters
Storing yarn (other ways to store yarn)
Gardening Tools

If I really want to change the picture on the outside of the tin, dd could tear up tissue paper and glue it on, or even use cut up magazine pictures. Then we could cover it in modge podge or shelac.

We might even be able to cut apart her Harry Potter lego boxes! Cut out different things she wants kept from the box (like the front picture, which piece goes with which set, etc), glue or tape down a sheet protector on the inside sidewall (to put the directions in), and put those legos in there!

Still have to check the first aid kit.

De-clutter 2

2 trash bags taken out to the dumpster, laundry hamster finally empty but there’s 3 bags of laundry in the car waiting to go to the laundromat, the bucket of containers and toys needing to be washed quickly turned into a garbage bag full. I have to empty my dishwasher and put those containers and toys in there to be washed. The throw rug is also thrown in the dumpster - actually it is a remnant when the complex finally put new carpet in the common hall. Now I get all the cleaners and rags, re-fill the toilet paper holder and check the first aid kit.

What? Me, Organized?
How do you stay organized? Between books, game pieces and plastic kitchen lids, even the best organized of us may need a bit of help. But I tell ya…I was extremely organized — before child!

Well, it’s one of those days where I feel overwhelmed. There’s way too much to do. It’s like I feel there is so much that I don’t know what to do first. I start doing something and get way too involved and get nothing done. That’s what happened yesterday; got too involved, it turned into a project and nothing was accomplished.

So today when I woke up, I thought I’d try again. I am starting with the bathroom. I am going really slow. I did the right side between the toilet and the sink. Took a break, and got myself involved in another project. I stopped that and put it down. I went back to the bathroom and did the left side between the toilet and the bathtub.

Now my problem is where am I going to put all the toys? Barbies, bath toys, bubble stuff… I already have more than 1/2 a garbage bag full of trash. Containers that need to be washed and refilled with q-tips, shampoo and other stuff are in a bucket. Lots of hair bands which I’m going to put into a baggie for now. And how do you clean a plunger? Well, searching for a proper way to care for them, I found this: The Blue Goo Story - so, no more blue goo.

Kids ‘Best’ Work

February 24th, 2004

What do you use to keep your kids best work in? So far, I’m using a filing cabinet (but that has just about everything in it) and a file folder box for current work. It looks something like this but in letter size. I don’t have anything yet for her best work, but if I keep saving everything I will run out of room.
